Seventy years ago today, we began operations following the state’s purchase of the ferry system from Puget Sound Navigation Company (Black Ball Line). Thanks to 70 years of well-trained crews, highly skilled staff and a focus on customer service, we've been proud to serve our state for seven decades! In celebration of 70 years of service, our 70th anniversary logo is being installed on each of our 21 vessels. https://wsdot.wa.gov/news/2021/06/01/washington-state-ferries-marks-70-years-service |

All operating ferries sounded their whistle at 11:11 a.m. today in honor of Veterans Day. We’re also flying a military branch or Merchant Marine flag and the POW/MIA flag on our vessels today. We're proud to employ many veterans. They bring invaluable skills from their time in service. One of our employee veterans says, "I am using the confidence I gained to confront new challenges." We’re grateful for the contributions veterans make each day and honored to have them on our team! | Washington St

We saw the sign… at Klahowya Secondary School! A piece of our history has a new home! We donated a nameplate from the retired ferry Klahowya to @klahowyasecondaryschool. We were graced by talented student performances and joined by community leaders and school representatives for the ceremony and unveiling. Ever wondered what our ferries look like under the water line? Well, here you go. The 57-year-old Kaleetan is taking a well-deserved break at Dakota Creek Industries in Anacortes. The vessel is required to occassionally go into dry dock to ensure it’s in safe, working order and comply with U.S. Coast Guard requirements. Being out of the water allows for comprehensive inspections, repairs and maintenance that help prevent breakdowns and extend a boat’s lifespan. Kaleetan is scheduled to return to

EEEEEEEEEEEEE-EEEEEEEEEEE-EEEEEEEE That’s dolphin for: Heads up Seattle/Bremerton commuters! We will be replacing two floating dolphin structures at our Bremerton terminal this winter. What’s a dolphin? A dolphin is a landing aid used to help our captains navigate into our docks. They are the structures that the vessel parks between when tied up to let riders on an off- think of them as giant bumpers. Because of this work, one vessel will need to dock overnight in Seattle while the work takes pl

There are some perks to working on the Salish Sea. One of them is seeing marine wildlife. Chief Mate Graham Dewitt spotted a pod of orcas on Sunday. To share the amazing sight with others, he recorded video while Kitsap was stopped so the killer whales could safely pass by during the Mukilteo/Clinton route sailing. What a treat! | Washington State Ferries

We never plan on break downs, but we are always ready when it happens. Today, the Samish needed urgent repairs and our crew sprung into action, working tirelessly to get the vessel ready to get back into service. Repairs are ongoing and updates will be provided as we get them. Video description: a montage of photos of crews working on the Samish in the engine room. Check out this wild video! A 100-foot, crewless “ghost boat” drifted through our Mukilteo terminal early this morning. Situations like this are not just unusual, they’re dangerous. An unlit vessel can create serious hazards on the water and put other boats and people at risk. This is why navigational lights on our ferries are so important. Tokitae had to approach the dock very carefully until the drifting vessel moved out of the way. Luckily, the boat did not cause any damage to our terminal. Ku
