Seventy years ago today, we began operations following the state’s purchase of the ferry system from Puget Sound Navigation Company (Black Ball Line). Thanks to 70 years of well-trained crews, highly skilled staff and a focus on customer service, we've been proud to serve our state for seven decades! In celebration of 70 years of service, our 70th anniversary logo is being installed on each of our 21 vessels. https://wsdot.wa.gov/news/2021/06/01/washington-state-ferries-marks-70-years-service |

Did you know: If a passenger goes unconscious our boat crew members are trained to jump in and administer CPR. It gives us a sigh of relief when our customers jumped at the chance to learn this possible life-saving skill thanks to local community partners. Public Health Seattle & King County Emergency Medical Service (EMS) Division members demonstrated hands-only CPR techniques to our passengers on the Seattle/Bainbridge route in October. | Washington State Ferries

Ever wondered what our ferries look like under the water line? Well, here you go. The 57-year-old Kaleetan is taking a well-deserved break at Dakota Creek Industries in Anacortes. The vessel is required to occassionally go into dry dock to ensure it’s in safe, working order and comply with U.S. Coast Guard requirements. Being out of the water allows for comprehensive inspections, repairs and maintenance that help prevent breakdowns and extend a boat’s lifespan. Kaleetan is scheduled to return to

This weekend, our crew aboard the Issaquah rescued a person in the water near Anacortes. They launched a rescue boat and quickly brought the person onto our vessel for evaluation. Our Anacortes terminal staff worked quickly to contact emergency medical services and get this person the care they needed. This is just one example of our employees dedication and emergency training in action, ensuring passengers and the community are safe every day. Video description: A rescue boat traveling away fro

On this National Maritime Day, we’re taking a sec to acknowledge those who sail, day in and day out, to get you where you need to be. For our vessels to sail, we need more than a captain in the wheelhouse. We need deck hands, engineers, mates, galley employees and security personnel. Whether you’re sightseeing, commuting to work or appointments, or taking a ride for the heck of it, our crews are there for you. The maritime industry is deeply rooted in Western Washington’s identity and we’re prou

🎶Practicing our boat moves🎶 This week, we’re shaking things up and moving things around. Our slower fall travel season allows us to do more maintenance on our fleet. But that means we have to move boats around! With Kaleetan back from maintenance and on our Anacortes/San Juan Islands route, the 144-car Samish moved to our Mukilteo/Clinton route this morning to replace 144-car Suquamish. The 144-car Suquamish just entered service on our Edmonds/Kingston route, replacing the 202-car Puyallup. Th

We never plan on break downs, but we are always ready when it happens. Today, the Samish needed urgent repairs and our crew sprung into action, working tirelessly to get the vessel ready to get back into service. Repairs are ongoing and updates will be provided as we get them. Video description: a montage of photos of crews working on the Samish in the engine room. It was a great summer, thanks to our crew, service planners, terminal employees, engineers, customer service, maintenance crews, and of course, our riders. On Sunday in Rich Passage near Bremerton, our crew aboard Walla Walla launched a rescue boat after a kayaker was spotted in distress. The person was safely brought to shore. For the first time ever, we will have onboard food galley service on our Point Defiance/Tahlequah route starting today, June 21! Our vendor, Sodexo Live!, will operate aboard Chetzemoka from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. The galley will offer limited hot foods (soups, pretzels, popcorn), pre-made sandwiches, salads and packaged snacks. Ice cream and various cold beverages will also be available, but there will be no beer or wine due to the short duration of the crossing. | Washington State Ferries

Put simply… line cutting is pretty *ferry horn blast* RUDE. We all have places to be. But don’t be THAT guy and cut a fellow passenger off when getting in line for the ferry. As summer comes in swinging, long wait times for drivers are to be expected - and frustrating. Drivers who cut in line can be fined by @wastatepatrol - not a good look. Reminder: only law enforcement can’t issue fines and enforce laws. Our employees are not law enforcement agents. Please be kind. Video description: a woman

Check out this wild video! A 100-foot, crewless “ghost boat” drifted through our Mukilteo terminal early this morning. Situations like this are not just unusual, they’re dangerous. An unlit vessel can create serious hazards on the water and put other boats and people at risk. This is why navigational lights on our ferries are so important. Tokitae had to approach the dock very carefully until the drifting vessel moved out of the way. Luckily, the boat did not cause any damage to our terminal. Ku

Picture this... You’re on a ferry at night, seemingly the only passenger. You know there is someone piloting the vessel, and you’ve seen a deck hand or two patrolling but other than that... silence. You decide to take a walk around, and from a behind a locked door you hear... what’s that? The chatter and clatter of an engine room crew? Our engine rooms are staffed 24/7 to ensure our vessels are running optimally. While on these graveyard shifts, engineers and oilers are doing inspections, making

Have you ever wondered about the navigational skills needed to make one of our more difficult crossings? The Port Townsend-Coupeville route is notoriously difficult to navigate, as Keystone Harbor has strong currents and the route is often affected by strong winds. Mark Parris, a captain on the route, explains some of the challenges involved. Video description: a man in a ferry pilothouse talks to the camera and describes what is on the screen. Safety is our top priority and that doesn’t stop with passengers and crew! This family was hoping to catch a ride to Vashon when our Southworth crew spotted them. Unattended animals are not allowed on vessels, so our folks helped move them away from the busy loading lanes. | Washington State Ferries
