Enrichment is something mentally or physically stimulating for the animals that encourages a natural behavior. In the wild, dholes would have to forage and search for food. Keeper Brent planted some bamboo for them and attached meat to the top of it. The dholes had to figure out how to get the meat. This also encouraged cooperative feeding which, as pack animals, is another natural behavior for the dholes. | Bronx Zoo

Have you spotted our vibrant flock of American flamingos at the entrance of the Aquatic Bird House? As you can see in this video, they are very vocal! A large, feeding flock of flamingos generally maintains a continuous stream of cluck calls that sound harsh and edged. They normally vocalize with a "goose-like" double-honk that sounds like “ka-hank” or “ka-rrak”. Keeper Leela tells us that louder vocalizations could be due to spotting a bird of prey above the flock, increased social interaction,

On this day in 1899, the Bronx Zoo opened to the public! The Bronx Zoo is a place of many firsts: We were among the first zoos in the world founded by an organization with a conservation mission, to have a wildlife education department, and have a zoo-based veterinary program, which has allowed us to become a pioneer in zoological healthcare. Since we first opened 125 years ago, we have welcomed more than 260 million guests. And every year, over half a million school and camp group children visi

We’re one of just several zoos to work with the red bird-of-paradise, a near threatened bird from West Papuan Island. Female red birds-of-paradise normally lay two eggs. Our keepers in the Ornithology Department leave one egg in the nest to hatch with the adult female and remove the other egg to artificially incubate for hand-rearing. Our female red bird-of-paradise has experienced difficulties in the past when raising two chicks at the same time, and this helps lessen the burden on her. Seen he

A weekly check-in with the juvenile Komodo dragons. Mature Komodo dragons are apex predators meaning they are at the top of the food chain and have no natural predators. However juvenile Komodo dragons can be preyed upon by birds of prey or other larger Komodo dragons. This is why as a juvenile they will spend much of the first year of their life in trees. | Bronx Zoo

At the Bronx Zoo, our peafowl roam freely. Peafowl “headquarters” is located at the African Plains, but many of them prefer to congregate near the Children’s Zoo. There is a large tree located at the Children’s Zoo where a number of them can be found sleeping at night. If you’re ever at the zoo for an after-hours event, be sure to look up and you might spot them. | Bronx Zoo
