Pain after root canal treatment is the most common complication of treatment. Because the nerve is removed during root canal treatment the pain is not from inside the tooth. Most patients don’t understand that teeth without a nerve can feel pain BECAUSE their bone, periodontal ligament and gingiva (gums) are very much alive! These are usually inflamed after treatment. Interesting enough these are also inflamed if the root canal is infected (as the immune system in these tissues becomes inflamed)
