Big runs, hot bites, and epic fishing ahead! 🐟🔥 Walleye season opens Saturday, May 3. Hot Tips: 🎯 Try river mouths, rocky shorelines, and slow-moving pools. 🎣 Jigs tipped with minnows or soft plastics like curly-tailed grubs and paddletail swimbaits are always must-haves in any Walleye angler’s tackle box. But don’t sleep on crankbaits with a slow, wide wobble, or the always trusty Green Mountain Grabber worm harness! 🌅 Early morning and evening are prime times to hook a big one! ✅ Reminder

📢 Calling all friends of wildlife! The 2026 Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department Calendar has arrived! 📢 Ok, so maybe it's not quite as big a deal as the start of deer season or spring migration, but we're still very excited to announce that this new edition of the calendar is chock full of beautiful images by talented local photographers of some of the state's fauna, including a gray tree frog, wild turkey gobbler and snowy owl. Additionally, each month conveniently lists helpful hunting, fishi

It's spawning season at Vermont's five fish culture stations! Each year we raise more than a million fish for angling opportunities and native species restoration. And each year it all begins with the egg collection process from broodstock fish, the special class of mature salmon, trout, and walleye who we carefully collect eggs from before returning safely to the hatchery or the wild. Broodstock all play the same role, but not all broodstock are the same. Wild broodstock are those fish that are

Vermont's deep freeze is doing its thing ❄️ Thanks to the sustained cold snap we've been experiencing, ice on many lakes and ponds is getting thicker, making it a great time for winter fun. Just remember, if you're heading out to fish, skate, or explore, ice thickness varies, so always check as you go and stay safe! 📷 Take a peek beneath the surface with us in this VWFD staff footage captured at Bristol Pond over the weekend. | Vermont Fish & Wildlife

🐟 YOU'RE WATCHING FISH HISTORY BEING MADE! 🐟 These yearling lake trout are part of the last "class" of lakers raised in our hatcheries and released into Lake Champlain... if all goes well, forever! Why are we stopping stocking? Because Lake Champlain's native lake trout are officially recovered! Results are in, and it was a pretty darn good year in terms of the hard mast crop! Our biologists found that acorn production was fair to good in much of the state, with a few pockets of crop failure. Those were balanced out, though, by some honest to goodness bumper crops like the one in this video from Rutland County! The real news, though, is that it was more or less a beech nut bonanza this year. We had an *excellent* beech nut crop in most areas of the state, with Southern Vermont leading t

Vermont hunters harvested over 15,000 deer in 2021, providing families and communities around the state with about 3.1 million servings of local venison. The total harvest is a little lower than 2020, but VTFWD biologist Nick Fortin says that shouldn't be a surprise, noting that “some decline in the harvest was expected this year, as we’ve been working to reduce deer numbers in some areas to keep them in balance with the available habitat.” Whether as source of food, a cherished tradition, a way

In this video, you'll see us using a new system of transporting fish through tubing rather than buckets. Eliminating bucket stocking and using this method was successful and had the added benefit of being able to see the fish traveling through the clear tubing into the river. Here, steelhead are being stocked for sportfish restoration in Central Vermont. These are about 7-8 inches in length and came from the Ed Weed Fish Culture Station in Grand Isle. This fall, fisheries staff are using a new type of gear called a fyke net to sample fish communities in central Vermont. A fyke net is a specialized fishing gear that passively captures fish as they swim along their natural paths. It’s design consists of a series of funnel-shaped hoops connected to a net with wings and a lead that direct fish toward the hoops. This method is particularly valuable as fish are much less vulnerable to mortality compared to other methods such as gill nets. Fish data

🚨Caution! Wide Load Coming Through🚨 Thank you to Northfield resident Ann Sivori for sharing with us trail cam footage of this large black bear. This year, several important fall foods for bears were not as plentiful as they were last fall. Fish and Wildlife biologists survey oak and beech stands around the state each fall season to assess how plentiful these important foods are for wildlife and this year they found that beechnuts and acorns were less abundant. This means that bears are extra v
