Mozart wrote his Clarinet Concerto for an instrument that is longer and lower than the normal clarinet, but we don’t fully know what this clarinet looked like or played like. We don’t even quite know how many notes it had. Specially for our performance, this week, soloist Katherine Spencer has teamed up with clarinet maker Guy Cowley to commission a new design of basset clarinet, which will have a fresh and unique take on this extraordinary concerto.
