What we all strive for in bowl turning - smooth, easy, and fluid. Minimal sanding. Very little muscle. Here's why I am a big proponent of the 40/40 grind and the Push Cut style: while it may take a bit more practice than some other methods to master, it provides the most satisfaction once you do. Curves are easier and more natural, the bowl is ready for 120-180 grit sandpaper straight from the tool, and it's nicer to your body without all the bounce and vibration. The one mistake that everyone makes when they learn it (myself included 🙋‍♀️) is they close the flute too far when sharpening the wings, which rolls over the bevel on the wings. These Freehand Sharpening Guides prevent that from happening. They sit on top of the flute, and are magnetic to stick in the gouge flute. They are made to the shape of my Push Cut gouges. I can’t guarantee that they work with all parabolic flutes.
