In professional Air Hockey competition each match begins with a Face-off. The referee instructs each player to be ready, then releases the puck after 1, 2, 3 or 4 seconds (determined secretly by the ref). Both players attempt to get control of the puck. The winner of the Face-off earns the first possession, and then each game thereafter, as players swap sides, the puck will start on that same side of the table.
