Brutally cold” air is expected to settle in behind the storm that will affect a dozen states, from eastern Colorado to Maryland.

A major winter storm began Saturday in the central U.S. and was forecast to move east over the next several days, producing heavy snow, significant ice and frigid temperatures, according to the National Weather Service.

Winter storm warnings will take effect at noon on Sunday. On Sunday, the morning will stay dry, but snow will move in by the afternoon. Highs will reach the upper 20s to low 30s. Snow will mix with or transition to sleet and freezing rain by Sunday evening and continue through the early overnight hours.
