California voters will approve Gov. Gavin Newsom’s push to redraw the state’s congressional maps, CNN’s Decision Desk projects, boosting the national Democratic Party’s efforts to win control of the US House next year.

Proposition 50, which is being pushed hard by Gov. Gavin Newsom (D), would pause the use of maps drawn by the nonpartisan California Citizens Redistricting Commission until 2031, and allow for new maps to be used that would help secure five additional Democratic seats in Congress. Polls open at 7 a.m. and close at 8 p.m.

“California has spoken,” San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria posted on social media. “We’ve taken decisive action to protect our democracy and resist efforts to rig our national election. President Donald Trump has reacted after Democrats collected key wins in the Virginia and New Jersey governor races, along with the New York City mayoral race. Trump posted on Truth Social, “‘TRUMP WASN’T ON THE BALLOT, AND SHUTDOWN, WERE THE TWO REASONS THAT REPUBLICANS LOST ELECTIONS TONIGHT,’ according to Pollsters.”
