One person is dead after a Saturday evening avalanche in northern Colorado’s Rocky Mountains near Berthoud Pass in Grand County, sheriff’s officials said.

Few details were immediately available but a sheriff's office spokesperson said the avalanche was triggered around 4:45 p.m. in the "Fingers Area" on Berthoud Pass near Winter Park.

The victim was traveling on a terrain feature known as The Nose near Silverton, Colo., when the avalanche occurred on Thursday, officials said.

A backcountry snowboarder was caught, buried and killed in an avalanche Saturday, Feb. 22, on Mines Peak east of Berthoud Pass, according to a preliminary report from the Colorado Avalanche Information Center.

One person was killed in an avalanche in Grand County Saturday. The Grand County Sheriff's Office said at around 4:45 p.m. Saturday, dispatchers received a report of a skier-triggered avalanche in the Fingers area on Berthoud Pass.
