The companies that make artificial intelligence chatbots are racing to make the apps seem smarter, make fewer mistakes, and handle more complicated tasks.

OpenAI noted that it was not totally eliminating older models like GPT-4o, which is about a year old at this point. However, these models are now limited to the developer API. For people who hopped on ChatGPT to have a conversation with their favorite AI, things are different now that GPT-5 is the default.

OpenAI launched its most advanced language model Thursday with the release of GPT-5, a flagship product the company says will enhance ChatGPT as it reportedly nears a $500 billion valuation and aims to stave off competitors in Google, Anthropic and more.
