OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has been working on wriggling out from under the control of the company’s nonprofit board ever since they (briefly) fired him. But, after several efforts to prevent the move, including a lawsuit filed by OpenAI co-founder Elon Musk, the company announced on Monday that it will keep its structure for now.

After months spent pursuing a plan to convert itself into a for-profit business, OpenAI is reversing course and said Monday its nonprofit will continue to control the company that makes ChatGPT and other artificial intelligence products.

OpenAI and its technology will remain in the control of a non-profit organization, according to a letter to employees from Sam Altman on Monday. The big picture: OpenAI began as a non-profit, but Altman has been considering changing the structure of OpenAI since shortly after his brief ouster in November 2023 and the cost of building and maintaining ChatGPT has skyrocketed.
