Memorial Day is about more than the beach, and the Philly area is hosting multiple events with a sense of remembrance befitting the holiday.

In all, AAA estimates that 525,000 Philadelphia-area residents will travel over the long weekend, a 3% boost in Memorial Day travel from last year.

The rains that have the drought conditions on the run backed off, but on the eve of the apocryphal “official start of summer,” the region is getting a reminder that the solstice still is about a month away.

Memorial Day weekend is considered the unofficial start of summer, but with chilly temperatures, it felt more like fall.

Long lines met travelers at Philadelphia International Airport on Thursday morning as the Memorial Day weekend travel period got underway.

According to AAA Auto Club, an estimated 45 million people in the US and 525,000 in the Philly area were expected to travel more than 45 miles over the holiday. That is a three percent increase over last year. Traffic was moderate for most of the day coming home from the Shore points.

The platform will apply its anti-party detection technology to last-minute bookings for entire houses during Memorial Day and Fourth of July weekends. Last year, it deterred 600 bookings in Philly.
