Robert Brooks Jr. has become a poster child for prison reform after his father was murdered by correction officers, and is now advocating for legislation to improve the prison system.
Advocates for prison reform were in Albany on Tuesday, calling on Governor Kathy Hochul to sign the Omnibus Prison Reform Act into law.
The son of the inmate killed in a Utica-area prison was in Albany on Tuesday, calling for reform. It comes one day after a former CO from Adams was found guilty of murder.
A New York correctional officer was convicted of murder in an inmate's death, while two others were acquitted. Governor Kathy Hochul initiated extensive prison reforms after the incident, which highlighted systemic issues within the correctional system.
“We are not protesting what he did, we are protesting the killing of him,” said Mitzi Magleby, who’s a prison reform advocate. “We are protesting that he is now a changed man, and he needs mercy and grace now.”
As the number of successful medical parole applications stagnates, the Pardon and Parole Board voted unanimously earlier this month to request a legal opinion on who has the authority to refer a prisoner to the medical parole docket.
