Trump’s threat is a broader version of one his administration has made many times already, attempting to cut funding to local governments it declared as “sanctuary jurisdictions,” but those efforts have been stopped repeatedly by judges.
Trump's speech, which is expected to start around or after 2 p.m., marks his first visit to Michigan in 2026, and his third visit to the DEC. He previously delivered campaign addresses in August 2016 and October 2024 when the DEC invited both major party presidential candidates to speak, reports Natalie Davies.
As Mr. Trump took to the stage, he touted the economy and also his victory in the 2024 election in Michigan. Mr. Trump called the event the "easiest speech I've had to make" because "all I'm doing is spewing off what the hell we've done."
Trump — who has spent a lot of time surrounded by billionaires during his first year back in the White House — is counting on wealthy business leaders to create economic growth.
Business leaders at the Detroit Economic Club, meeting at the MotorCity Casino Hotel, responded to Trump's address with tepid applause.
