The U.S. Air Force said Thursday it would deny all transgender service members who have served between 15 and 18 years the option to retire early and would instead separate them without retirement benefits.

Longer-serving transgender service members will have the same choice as more junior ones: quit or be forced out.

The decision effectively eliminates a path to retirement for those nearing the 20-year mark required for full benefits.
