The Republican-controlled U.S. Congress looked set to move ahead this week to keep the government funded and avert a partial shutdown beginning on Saturday, as Washington is rocked by President Donald Trump's rapid moves to slash federal agencies.

House Republicans unveiled a spending bill Saturday that would keep federal agencies funded through Sept. 30, pushing ahead with a go-it-alone strategy that seems certain to spark a major confrontation with Democrats over the contours of government spending.

The stopgap measure would keep the government funded through Sept. 30. But Democratic leaders are opposed, and it’s unclear if Johnson can pass it with only Republicans.
