Bengaluru, once known as India's garden city, has been suffering under various issues from gridlocked traffic to poor civic facilities. Rapid urbanisation and the encroachment of the city's lakes have blocked connecting canals, limiting Bengaluru's capacity to absorb and siphon off water.

Torrential rain impacted parts of Bengaluru in the early hours of Monday, leading to significant waterlogging and some casualties. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert (be prepared) for urban and rural areas of Bengaluru. Meanwhile, several videos showcasing the destruction surfaced on social media.

On Monday night, the city experienced heavy downpours, which caused waterlogging in several regions and delayed over 20 flights.

All private and government schools in Bengaluru will remain closed today, October 21, 2024. The school holiday has been announced due to heavy rains in the city and the orange alert issued by the IMD predicting heavy rainfall and thunderstorms in the city.

The regional weather observatory issued the latest forecast around 6:45 am, stating that Bengaluru is likely to experience heavy showers in the coming three hours. The Met department also warned of temporary disruption of electricity and minor traffic snarls.
