Texas House Democrats who have left the state to block a vote on redistricting were hosted by California leaders on Friday.

The governor must convince Californians to adopt a ballot initiative allowing Democrats to redraw congressional maps and neutralize GOP gains in Texas.

The governor connected President Donald Trump’s request that Texas Republicans redraw districts to eke out another five House seats to the Jan. 6 insurrection, rollbacks on abortion rights, Trump’s dismantling of federal agencies and targeting of law firms, universities and museums, and federal deportation raids in California.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) on Tuesday urged Illinois and New York to press ahead with redistricting efforts as GOP lawmakers push to pick up five additional House seats in Texas.

California tried to play by a higher set of standards with its independent redistricting, Newsom said. An election in November could change that.
