Zohran Mamdani wasted little time as mayor-elect of New York City before making clear that he sees part of his new role as standing up to the president of the United States, who had threatened not only to defund the city if he won but also to arrest and deport him.

Zohran Mamdani has made New York City history with his ascendant election victory Tuesday night, ABC News projects. New Yorkers chose Mamdani to become the city's 111 th mayor, and with that title Mamdani will represent several firsts in the city's three-and-a-half-century existence.

Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic front-runner in the New York City mayoral race, marched under the bridge’s arches with elected officials, holding a banner that said, “Our Time Is Now.”
