As Jimmy Carter's remains are scheduled to be transported to Washington, D.C. on Tuesday, here is what to know about this week's funeral schedule.

“Jimmy Carter was always an outsider ,” said biographer Jonathan Alter, explaining how Carter capitalized on the fallout of the Vietnam War and Watergate scandal that toppled Richard Nixon. “The country was thirsting for moral renewal and for Carter, as this genuinely religious figure, to come in and clean things up."

Update 12:26 p.m. ET, Jan. 7: The remains of former President Jimmy Carter arrived at Dobbins Air Reserve Base in Cobb County, Georgia. The 39th president’s casket was greeted with a 21-gun salute and the U.S. Army’s Maneuver Center of Excellence Band played “Hail to the Chief” and “Nearer my God, to Thee,” WSB-TV reported.
