Auburn is firing coach Hugh Freeze just one day after the Tigers mustered three points in a disappointing home loss to Kentucky, the program's fifth setback in six games this season against SEC competition, CBS Sports' Brandon Marcello, Matt Zenitz and Richard Johnson report.
If there’s one thing that recently-fired Auburn Tigers head coach Hugh Freeze struggled with, it was quarterbacks. Whether it was Payton Thorne’s incessant turnovers or Jackson Arnold’s struggles in the pocket, Freeze never managed to get over the hump at the quarterback position.
Hugh Freeze’s firing brings change to Auburn’s offense. He was the Tigers’ play caller for the first nine games this season, but now, those duties will go to offensive coordinator Derrick Nix.
After going back-to-back 6-7 in 2023 and 2024, Auburn boosters and AD Andy Cohen bet big on Hugh Freeze to make it to the playoff, or at least near the playoff realm in 2025. FYI: Hugh Freeze is the only head coach to enter his third year with a losing record in the last 50 years.
