It’s not easy for a team to stay in contention after trading its best player, but that’s exactly what the Boston Red Sox are doing. They traded star designated hitter / third baseman Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants in June, but they still own the AL’s third Wild Card spot ahead of Friday’s bout with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Red Sox on Friday placed infielder Marcelo Mayer on the 10-day injured list with a right wrist sprain. To fill his spot, the club recalled infielder David Hamilton from Triple A Worcester. Mayer described feeling “a tight grab” on a swing during his second at-bat in Wednesday’s 9-8, 11-inning win over the Phillies.
